ABHIJEET VERMA - ASHTANGA YOGA

Pranayama. Yoga. Meditation. Ashtanga. Serve Humanity.

ABOUT ME

I am an Ashtanga Yoga practitioner, and a student of guruji, Sri Sharath Jois and my teacher, Ajay Tokas, learning traditional Mysore style Ashtanga yoga. Pursuing Masters in Yoga Therapy from SYVYASA.

Cured myself of Asthma and practicing Pranayama since the last 20 years. Meditation has helped me immensely in all aspects of my life.

Yoga saved me during the worst phase of my life when I went into depression and since then, Yoga has been my eternal saviour. Left my corporate job to pursue yoga full time and intend to serve humanity by helping them discover the importance and benefits of yoga in our lives. Since then, there is no turning back.

My simple goal is to help and introduce yoga to as many people as I can, and help them reap the benefits of this old age practice, in this fast-paced world.

PRANAYAMA

Prana means breath, respiration, life, vitality, wind, energy or strength.

Ayama means length, expansion, stretching or restraint.

Pranayama thus connotes extension of breath and its control. This control is over all the functions of breathing namely -

  1. Inhalation, which is termed as Puraka.

  2. Exhalation, which is called Rechaka.

  3. Retention or holding the breath, a state where there is neither inhalation nor exhalation, which is called Kumbhaka.

The yogi's life is not measured by the number of his days but by the number of his breaths. Therefore, he follows the proper rhythmic patterns of slow and deep breathing.

These rhythmic patterns strengthen the respiratory system, soothe the nervous system and reduce craving. As desires and cravings diminish, the mind is set free and becomes a fit vehicle for concentration.

Prana in the body of the individual is part of the cosmic breath of the Universal spirit . An attempt is made to harmonize the individual breath with the cosmic breath through the practice of pranayama.

MEDITATION

The essence of Meditation is not so much an effort at changing your thoughts or your behaviour so that you can become a better person, but in realizing that no matter what you might think about the circumstances that define your life, you are already good, whole and complete. Its about recognizing inherent potential of your mind.

Any attempt to capture the direct experience of the nature of the mind in words, is impossible. The best way to describe this experience is that it is immeasurably peaceful and through repeated experience and stability of the mind, it is unshakable beyond the realms of reality.

Its an experience of absolute well being that radiates through all physical, emotional and mental states - even those that might be ordinarily labelled as "unpleasant". This sense of well being, regardless of the fluctuations of outer and inner experiences, is one of the clearest definitions of what "Happiness" is and I was fortunate to have caught a glimpse of it during my 6 years of practice.

Patanjali system of yoga instructs one on how to control the functions of the body's air in a  technical manner so that ultimately all the functions of air within, becomes favorable for purifying the soul of material attachment. According to this yoga system, pratyag atma is the ultimate goal.

Eight steps to self realization in Ashtanga Yoga -

  • Yama (explain the codes of ethical behaviour to be observed and followed in everyday life )

  • Niyama (positive energy that brings discipline, removes inertia, gives shape to the inner desire to follow the yogic path)

  • Asana( Asana brings steadiness, health and lightness of limb)

  • Pranayama( Pranayama connotes extension of breath and its control)

  • Pratyahara( where senses are brought under control)

  • Dharana( here a person is concentrated wholly on a simple point or on a task in which he is completely engrossed )

  • Dhyana ( When flow of concentration is uninterrupted, the state that arises is dhyana)

  • Samadhi ( It is the end of persons quest. In the state of samadhi a person is fully conscious and alert)
